Transformation in the Public Sector: The Role of Digital and Cloud Strategies

The new G7 marks an expansion of the Marketplace, making an increasingly broad range of suppliers and cloud-based services available to education, healthcare and local authority organisations.

Cloud computing is playing a transformational role in private sector organisations and the UK Government is keen to see public sector organisations fully embrace the cloud to drive operational efficiencies and improve the delivery of government services.

There’s little doubt that public sector organisations are under ongoing pressure, both financially and operationally, to deliver high quality public services and back in 2013 the Government set out a number of strategies and targets focused on digital transformation.

For example, the health secretary Jeremy Hunt set out plans for the NHS to go paperless by 2018 to ‘save billions’, improve services and meet the challenges of an ageing population. Following this, a Government paper entitled Government Digital Strategy: December 2013 set out how the government had been slow to realise the benefits of the digital age highlighting how, by going digital by default, between £1.7 and £1.8 billion a year could be saved.

The challenge now is for education, healthcare and local authority organisations to supercharge digital and cloud strategies to start realising the full benefits. I’ve led a number of projects over the last couple of years, which really serve to demonstrate the power of applying technology for true transformation and business re-engineering in the public sector.

Throughout 2016, I anticipate massive growth in the adoption of cloud-based services and solutions across the UK’s public sector, as organisations look to drive efficiencies and help workforces become more agile and responsive.

At Node4, we’re building out our team of dedicated public sector technology specialists to meet the growing demand for the cloud and ensure we are ahead of the curve in delivering the technologies that align closely with digital transformation strategies.

Our recent G-Cloud 7 listing means Node4 is ideally placed to help public sector organisations move IT to the cloud and create more agile, mobile and responsive services that can form the foundation of public service delivery.
